Inspirational and irrepressible - Music Director, Renton Thomson
After a happy childhood in a border village, where an excellent school music teacher taught him the basics of singing and music theory, Renton moved to Edinburgh where he started cello lessons at the Waddell School of Music. Making quick progress, he was offered a place at RSAMD to study with Joan Dickson, but rejected this to become a chartered accountant.

| After qualification he became the first accountant of Scottish Opera where he was able to develop his knowledge of singers and singing. As a useful amateur cellist, opportunities arose to conduct, firstly in London, then in Milngavie with the local orchestral society. He conducted and built up the Bearsden Burgh Choir from 1971 to 1979. He then taught Milngavie Young Singers before taking over Milngavie Choir in 1985. In the same year he became Finance Director of Scottish Ballet and has become well known in the artistic establishment in the West of Scotland. He is a natural musician with a wide knowledge and experience of the choral and oratorio repertoire. He greatly enjoys conveying his love and appreciation of these at rehearsals and in performance. |
